What does the music of French Impressionism actually have to do with cinema? Frankly, about as much as organ and saxophone: not too much at first glance - on closer inspection though simply everything!
The conception of the repertoire With Debussy and Ravel ... to the movies is the result of a long process of musical and personal development.
It can be said, the brothers Daniel and Stefan Gottfried, enriched our path to music and further developed within. Countless performances together in our youth in our bones, we decided to study music and our instruments at around the same time. Daniel trained as a concert organist, first in Vienna and then in Lyon - Stefan dedicated himself to the saxophone in jazz, first in Vienna and then in The Hague.
Independently of each other, we discovered our fascination for the colorful, equally expressive yet controlled, always mysteriously meandering French Impressionism, music of highest musical and technical demands which influenced our initially separate artistic work more and more. We were fascinated by how this music and its inherent flow creates images in our minds and literally evokes a film to run in front of the listener’s inner eye.
Consequently, what would be a better musical fit to this cinematographic side of French Impressionism than works that are inseparable from the moving images, support them or even make them possible in the first place: soundtracks!
It is the timeless melodies of the great Ennio Morricone, the mystical mood of Nino Rota's film music or the perfectly orchestrated compositions of John Williams that have always captivated us - in short, music without which the associated films would simply be unthinkable, creating nothing less than a „Gesamtkunstwerk“ in its classic sense.
How did this music with this instrumentation come about? The virtuoso instrumentalist and inventive arranger he is, Daniel edited, arranged and organized the orchestral and piano scores for the Späth organ in the Jesuit Church in Vienna and acts impressively as a conductor on the organ, eliciting the symphonic character of the instrument. Stefan skilfully blends into this unique tapestry of sound on the soprano and alto saxophone and impressively presents the wide spectrum of the saxophone and its expressive, lyrical, multi-faceted style of expression through nuanced variations in dynamics, tone colour and articulation. The jointly developed sonic language unites musical worlds, sheds fresh light on them and takes the listener on a special musical journey - cinematic experience included.

Daniel Gottfried
Daniel makes it his mission to elicit every facet of his instrument.
Born in Lower Austria in 1990, he completed his studies in organ and composition, first in Vienna at the Musik und Kunstuniversität, then in Lyon at the Conservatoire national supérieur musique et danse.
With great sensitivity for the respective organ, he interprets works from a broad stylistic palette as well as his own compositions and transcriptions of orchestral works for organ. He is particularly fascinated by the symphonic, musically and technically challenging repertoire of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He maintains a busy concert schedule, both as a soloist and as a duo with his brother Stefan. Among the major venues where Daniel has appeared in concert are Chartres Cathedral, the Auditorium National de Lyon, Saint-Séverin Church in Paris, Derby Cathedral and St Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna.
Daniel has been the principal organist at St Katharina Church in Zurich since 2022. He previously worked as organist at the Jesuit Church in Vienna. He teaches organ and organ improvisation at the Musik und Kunstuniversität of the City of Vienna.
Stefan Gottfried
Stefan has been inextricably attached to his saxophone since his early youth.
He was born in Lower Austria in 1993. As a graduate of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and the Music and Arts Private University in Vienna, where his teachers included Toon Roos, John Ruocco and Andy Middleton, his approach to music and his instrument is characterized by jazz, but he has also studied classical music from various eras and South American music intensively.
As a versatile instrumentalist, arranger and composer, he has worked in international bands and formations and impresses with his unique sound and lyrical playing on the alto and soprano saxophone. Stefan has developed his own musical projects such as the modern jazz quintet ‘Gottfried di Franco’, the duo ‘aLIGA’ with guitarist Jasper Iturrospe and performs regularly with his brother Daniel.
Stefan lives and works in Zurich.

Notre programme „Avec Debussy et Ravel … au cinéma“ est le résultat d’un processus de développement artistique long et passionnant.
On peut dire que nous, les frères Daniel et Stefan Gottfried, avons non seulement découvert la musique ensemble mais aussi que le développement musical de chacun est profondément marqué par d’innombrables expériences en commun. Après avoir joué de nombreux concerts ensemble pendant notre jeunesse, nous avons décidé d'étudier la musique à peu près à la même époque. Daniel a suivi une formation d'organiste de concert, d'abord à Vienne, puis à Lyon, tandis que Stefan s'est consacré entièrement au saxophone dans le jazz, d'abord à Vienne, puis à La Haye.
Indépendamment de l’autre, nous avons découvert notre fascination pour la musique impressionniste française. Venant de domaines différentes, nous avons tous les deux été séduits par la richesse des couleurs, la force expressive, le mysticisme et les exigences musicales très élevées de cette musique. On retrouve de plus en plus cette influence dans le travail artistique propre de chacun de nous. Ce qui nous a vraiment captivé, c'est la capacité de cette musique à évoquer des images. C'est comme si un film défilait devant nos yeux.
Penchons-nous donc sur la question de ce qui pourra correspondre à cette notion de « cinéma musical ». Une musique indissociable des images animées, qui soutient celles-ci, voire les rend possibles : les bandes sonores, bien sûr !
Ce sont des classiques intemporels qui nous passionnent : les mélodies du grand Ennio Morricone, l'ambiance mystique de film de Nino Rota, ou encore les compositions mises en scène de John Williams. Bref, des musiques sans lesquelles les films qui y sont liés seraient tout simplement impensables, et qui entrent en interaction avec les images animées. Ensemble, ils créent une œuvre d'art totale.
Comment cette musique est-elle née au sein de cette formation ?
Daniel a arrangé, réorganisé et orchestré les partitions d'orchestre et de piano pour l'orgue Späth de l'église de Vienne, faisant preuve d'une virtuosité impressionnante comme instrumentiste voire qu'en tant que chef d'orchestre. Il fait ainsi ressortir le caractère symphonique de son instrument.
Stefan s'intègre parfaitement à cette onde sonore. Grâce à des variations nuancées dans la dynamique et dans le timbre, il présente le large spectre expressif du saxophone soprano et alto, offrant une expérience lyrique inégalée.
Le langage sonore développé en commun réunit des univers musicaux.
Il plonge les auditeurs dans une nouvelle lumière et les emmène dans un voyage musical particulier - expérience cinématographique incluse.

Daniel Gottfried
Daniel s'efforce de faire ressortir toutes les facettes de son instrument.
Né en 1990 en Autriche, il a obtenu sa formation d’organiste et de compositeur d'abord à Vienne à la Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität, puis à Lyon au Conservatoire national de supérieur musique et danse.
Avec une grande sensibilité pour chaque instrument, il interprète des œuvres d’une large palette stylistique ainsi que ses propres compositions et transcriptions pour orgue. C’est surtout le répertoire symphonique de la fin du XIXe siècle et du début du 20e siècle, exigeant autant sur le plan musical et technique, qu’exerce une grande fascination pour lui.
Il donne des nombreux concerts en tant que soliste ainsi qu’en duo avec son frère Stefan. Parmi les lieux prestigieux où il s’est déjà produit se trouvent cathédrale de Chartres, l'Auditorium National de Lyon, l'église Saint-Séverin à Paris, Derby Cathedral et la cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Vienne.
Depuis 2022, Daniel est organiste titulaire de l’église Sainte-Cathérine à Zurich. Auparavant, il a travaillé comme organiste à l'église des Jésuites de Vienne. En outre, il enseigne l'orgue et l'improvisation à la Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität à Vienne.
Stefan Gottfried
Depuis sa jeunesse, Stefan est indissociable de son saxophone.
Il est né en 1993 en Autriche. En tant que diplômé du Conservatoire Royal de La Haye et de la Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität de Vienne, où il a notamment étudié auprès de Toon Roos, John Ruocco et Andy Middleton, son approche de la musique est marquée par le jazz.
Il s'est également intéressé à la musique classique de différentes époques ainsi qu’à la musique sud-américaine.
En tant qu'instrumentiste, arrangeur et compositeur polyvalent, il a joué au sein de groupes et formations internationaux et séduit par un son unique et son jeu lyrique au saxophone alto et soprano.
Stefan a développé ses propres projets musicaux comme le Modern Jazz Quintet « Gottfried di Franco », le duo « aLIGA » avec le guitariste Jasper Iturrospe et se produit régulièrement avec son frère Daniel.
Stefan vit et travaille à Zurich.

Che cosa ha in comune la musica dell’impressionismo francesce con il cinema? Cosa lega due strumenti così diversi come l’organo e il sassofono?
Di primo acchito potremmo pensare nulla, ma guardando più in profondità, li accomuna proprio tutto.
Il nostro programma “passeggiando con Debussy e Ravel… verso il cinema” è frutto di un lungo percorso. Noi fratelli, Daniel e Stefan Gottfried, la musica l’abbiamo scelta insieme ed insieme a lei siamo cresciuti. Influenzati dai molteplici concerti tenuti insieme nella nostra giovinezza, abbiamo deciso di intraprendere lo studio dello strumento nello stesso periodo. Daniel si è formato come organista concertista prima a Vienna e poi a Lione, Stefan, invece, si è dedicato interamente al sassofono jazz, prima a Vienna e poi a L’Aia.
Non ci è stato difficile seguire il fascino della colorata, espressiva, ma sempre controllata, musica dell’impressionismo francese, e la sua misteriosa sinuosità. Abbiamo lasciato che le sue più alte esigenze e tecniche musicali fluissero sempre più nel lavoro artistico individuale, in una prima fase ancora separato l’uno dall’altro, di entrambi. Ci entusiasmava, in particolare, come questa musica fosse in grado di creare immagini nella testa di chi la ascolta, facendoci sviluppare internamente, potremmo dire, la pellicola di un film.
Ci siamo domandati, allora, cosa meglio della musica si conviene a questo “cinema della nostra fantasia”, nel quale la musica supporta ed addirittura rende possibile la realizzazione di immagini in movimento, e abbiamo trovato la nostra risposta: le colonne sonore!
A noi hanno particolarmente emozionato le melodie intramontabili del grande Ennio Morricone, l'atmosfera mistica delle colonne sonore di Nino Rota o le composizioni perfettamente messe in scena di John Williams, insomma, una musica senza la quale i film ad essa associati sarebbero semplicemente impensabili, un connubio, quello di musica e immagini, che creano un'opera d'arte.
Come si realizza questo desiderio musicale attraverso i nostri strumenti?
Le partiture orchestrali e pianistiche sono state curate e riarrangiate da Daniel per l'organo Späth della Chiesa dei Gesuiti di Vienna. Straordinario non è solo il suo lavoro di strumentista, ma anche il suo ruolo, oseremmo dire, di direttore d’orchestra, attraverso i quali ci rivela il carattere sinfonico del suo strumento. In questo tappeto sonoro, si fonde abilmente Stefan al sassofono soprano e contralto e ci presenta, attraverso sfumate variazioni di dinamica, colore e articolazione l’ampio spettro sonoro del sassofono e la sua espressività lirica e sfaccettata.
L’unione di questo linguaggio sonoro rappresenta, al contempo, l’unione di due mondi musicali, che, rinati a luce nuova, guidano gli ascoltatori attraverso uno straordinario, meraviglioso viaggio musicale, includendo l’esperienza cinematografica.

Daniel Gottfried
Scoprire ogni sfacettatura del suo strumento è la sua missione.
Nato in Bassa Austria nel 1990, ha completato i suoi studi in organo e composizione prima al Conservatorio Musica e Arte di Vienna, poi a Lione presso il “Conservatoire national supérieur musique et danse”. Dotato di grande sensibilità musicale, Daniel interpreta all’organo un’ampia palette di opere stilisticamente varie, ma anche proprie composizioni e trascrizioni per organo di opere orchestrali.
In particolare, lo affascina il repertorio “romantico-sinfonico”, musicalmente e tecnicamente impegnativo, della fine del XIX e dell'inizio del XX secolo.
Svolge un'intensa attività concertistica come solista e in duo con il fratello Stefan. Tra i luoghi importanti in cui Daniel ha già tenuto concerti ci sono la Cattedrale di Chartres, l'Auditorium National de Lyon, la Chiesa di Saint-Séverin a Parigi, la Cattedrale di Derby e la Cattedrale di Santo Stefano a Vienna.
Dal 2022, Daniel è l'organista principale della chiesa “St. Katharina” di Zurigo. Precedentemente ha lavorato come organista presso la Chiesa dei Gesuiti a Vienna. Inoltre, insegna organo e improvvisazione organistica presso il Conservatorio Musica e Arte di Vienna.

È nato in Bassa Austria nel 1993. Si è diplomato al Conservatorio Reale dell'Aia e al Conservatorio Musica e Arte di Vienna, e annovera tra i suoi insegnanti artisti quali Toon Roos, John Ruocco e Andy Middleton.
Il suo approccio alla musica e allo strumento è influenzato dal jazz, tuttavia, Stefan si è dedicato intensamente anche allo studio della musica classica di epoche diverse e della musica sudamericana.
Strumentista, arrangiatore e compositore versatile, ha lavorato in band e formazioni internazionali e affascina i suoi ascoltatori con il sound unico e il suono lirico del suo sassofono contralto e soprano.
Stefan ha sviluppato anche propri progetti musicali come il Modern Jazz Quintet "Gottfried di Franco", il duo "aLIGA" con il chitarrista Jasper Iturrospe e si esibisce regolarmente con suo fratello Daniel.
Stefan vive e lavora a Zurigo.
